Tip 1
Before you set off, make sure you have everything you may need. Water bottle, comfy clothes, a hairband, snacks for afterwards (essential!) - do you have to bring any extra equipment such as a yoga mat or towel? It always helps to be prepared so if you are unsure, contact the studio beforehand (or check their website) to double check.
Tip 2
Arrive early, get an idea of the overall studio vibe and set up your practice space. This allows you to get a feel for the atmosphere, know where everything is (toilets, changing rooms, the studio) It is also really lovely to settle yourself in the space before class begins - pre class savasana is definitely a thing!
Tip 3
Introduce yourself to the teacher before class begins - they will be SO chuffed to chat with you, and it is the perfect opportunity to let them know it’s your first time (or if you are feeling a little nervous) also make them aware of any possible injuries or considerations so they can support you as much as possible.
Tip 4
Leave your phone on silent in your bag, which is tricky for us to do these days! This is essential for a few reasons, firstly to enable you to be present in your practice. We all know how tempting it is to take a peek at our notifications / briefly skim a message but this is your time. Secondly, turning your phone on silent prevents any panic-rustling to switch that rogue alarm or unexpected phone call off.
Tip 5
Utilise ALL the props. Blocks, straps - the lot. They truly are your best mate in the yoga practice. Here to support you and allow the best possible experience. They do not indicate you are ‘bad’ at yoga (though, there really is no such thing as being bad at this practice).
Tip 6
Finally, stay for savasana - always, even if you feel you are in a rush. This is the most important pose of all, and the perfect cherry on top of your yoga practice.
We hope our little collection of tips are helpful as you step in. There are plenty more within our course, which you can check out below - it is self-paced, online and jam packed with good stuff.
