DIY Yoga Props
Yoga can seem pretty fancy, studios stocked up with snazzy props that we don’t really know what to do with… 🤷 Or we feel slightly stumped when we are at home without our familiar blocks ‘n’ bolsters, not quite sure how to support our practice…
This is were the creativity comes in! Digging around our homes to make our DIY yoga space with every day bits and bobs. We realise how resourceful we are, and that you don’t need ‘all the gear’ to feel empowered in your practice.
The humble yoga block is our best mate in the practice. Always here to support us if we have a wobble or enable us to really feel the juice of each pose in a way that is nourishing for our body. Books are our standard at home alternative, but make sure they are sturdy and stacked well for stability. We also love to use a water bottle!
Another regular practice pal is a yoga strap. Most of us don’t have one of these knocking around, but often we have a dressing gown! Long dressing gown straps are the perfect alternative - you could also use a light and long scarf or perhaps a belt (ideally a lengthy one).
For The Art of TLC, we often see the bolsters rolled out - and we don’t have to miss out at home! Our favourite? Sofa cushions. Often pretty firm and supportive, but any cushion will do nicely! The closest at-home alternative to a bolster is a packed sleeping bag, if you have one. Cushions and bolster alternatives aren’t only reserved for restorative poses, but to call in to make ‘easy’ seats a little easier, elevating hips and creating more space.
These aren’t so common in the yoga studio, but can really make a difference in savasana. This pose is simultaneously the easiest and hardest pose of all… Which is made even more so at home! An eye pillow or covering gives us the opportunity to truly immerse in savasana. You can of course order these (our eye pillow is from Yoga Matters) but a folded, clean flannel will do nicely - a few drops of diluted essential oil is a nice bonus!
One of the lovely things about the home practice is the home comforts that come with it! Not all studios supply blankets, but we believe they are essential. Great for extra padding if you have sensitive joints and dreamy for warmth in savasana or meditative poses.
